Why cut keys at a hardware store
The key wall sits inside a full supply house. If the copy is for a new roommate, you can pick up the hooks, the hasp, or the paint in the same trip. The people cutting your key are the same shop that handles full lock work, so a copy that reveals a worn cylinder gets caught early.
A note on worn keys
A copy of a copy drifts from the original cut. If your key needs a wiggle ritual to work, bring the smoothest original you have, or ask about cutting fresh keys to the lock's code where possible.

That marking signals restricted handling. For keys on a restricted system, copies are cut only with authorization from the system's owner.
